Screen Actors Guild Award nominations to be announced live on Instagram

LOS ANGELES — One day after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association unveiled its Golden Globe nominations, the Screen Actors Guild will unveil nominations Thursday for its 27th annual awards, which are often strong predictors of the eventual success of performers on Oscar night.

The nominations will be announced live at 7:50 a.m. Pacific time on the Guild’s Instagram feed, @sagawards.

The SAG Awards are chosen by actors, making them a prized honor among performers since it represents peer recognition. The awards are also voted upon by a far larger group than the roughly 90-member HFPA that presents the Golden Globes.

Since the awards recognize actors — even the statuette is known as The Actor — SAG does not have any “best picture” prizes. But its top award is for the best ensemble cast of a motion picture, and scoring a nod in that category could influence Oscar voting when it begins next month.

The biopic “Mank” led the Golden Globe nominations with six, including a best actor nod for Gary Oldman and supporting-actress nomination for Amanda Seyfried. Oldman is easily in the running for a SAG nod, but there’s plenty of competition, led by what is sure to be a sentimental and well-deserved nod for the late Chadwick Boseman for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

Riz Ahmed is also a likely contender for “Sound of Metal,” along with Anthony Hopkins for “The Father.” Director Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” was snubbed by the Golden Globes, but actor Delroy Lindo could work his way into the SAG lead-actor category.

Viola Davis is virtually assured of a best actress nomination for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” while Frances McDormand should score a nod for “Nomadland” and Carey Mulligan for her intriguing turn in “Promising Young Woman.” Other possible contenders include Andra Day for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” Vanessa Kirby for “Pieces of a Woman” and Nicole Beharie for “Miss Juneteenth.”

As for that ensemble cast award, the possibilities seem vast. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was rife with strong performances and could land a nod, as well as “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “One Night in Miami” and “Nomadland.” The Korean-American film “Minari” was banished to the foreign-language category at the Globes, but could earn recognition from SAG in the top category.

For television programming, Netflix’s “The Crown” is always a top contender from drama ensemble, with other good bets including Netflix’s “Ozark,” NBC’s “This is Us,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” and “Perry Mason” and Netflix’s popular “Bridgerton.”

Emmy winner “Schitt’s Creek” appears inevitable to grab a nod for best comedy series ensemble, while newcomer “Ted Lasso” from Apple TV+ could force its way into the category. Other possibilities include ABC’s “black-ish,” HBO Max’s “The Flight Attendant,” FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows” and Netflix’s “Dead to Me.”

The nominations will be announced on the live Instagram feed by Lily Collins (“Emily in Paris” and “Mank”) and Daveed Diggs (“Hamilton, “Snowpiercer”).

After multiple reschedulings due to COVID-19 and a dispute with the Recording Academy over the March 14 date for the Grammys, the SAG Awards ceremony has been set for 6 p.m. Pacific time (9 p.m. Eastern) April 4 and will air on the TNT and TBS cable networks. The show will repeat at 8 p.m. Pacific time.
