Roundhouse Aquarium sandcastle competition returns

It’s time, once again, to show off your best summer sculpting skills.

The Roundhouse Aquarium in Manhattan Beach is hosting its second annual summer sandcastle-making contest to fundraise for its marine science education programs.

In the Sunsational Sandcastles competition, people will create their sandcastles wherever they are in the world with any type of sand or soil they have access to. If participants are too far from a beach, for example, they can make their creations at a nearby park or sandbox.

Applications opened earlier this month, on World Oceans Day, and are due by Friday, July 24. Sandcastle photo submissions are $30.

Folks can vote for the best sandcastles from July 28 to Aug. 14; $10 donations are requested to vote. All proceeds will support the Roundhouse’s science-based education programs on the oceans, tidelands and beaches.

The four judging categories are: High Tide, for best overall sandcastle; Sea-sational Splash, for best ocean-themed sandcastle; We Otter Stick Together, for best team spirit; and Creative Claws, for most creative sandcastle. Winners, which will be announced Aug. 17, will get prizes.
