GARDEN GROVE – A road rage episode early Saturday morning led to gunshots and a crash that sent a passenger to the hospital and two men to jail, police say.
At 1:20 a.m., a police officer driving southbound on Harbor Boulevard came across a major collision at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Lampson Avenue and discovered that a shooting occurred, said Garden Grove Police Sgt. Erick Leyva.
An investigation showed a red 2007 Ford pickup truck and a white 2014 Hyundai sedan were heading westbound on the Garden Grove (22) Freeway when the occupants got involved in an incident of road rage, Leyva said in a news release.
The vehicles left the freeway and drove northbound on Harbor Boulevard. The vehicles were following each other “and at least one occupant of the Ford pickup truck shot at the occupants of the Hyundai sedan,” the release said.
The shooter was identified as Pedro Montellana, 22, of Westminster.
The fight ended when the driver of the Hyundai, Juan Batalla-Olmedo, 19, of Santa Ana, purposely struck the pickup truck, according to Leyva. One passenger was injured during the collision and was transported to the hospital with what were described as non life-threatening injuries. The weapon in the shooting turned out to be a BB gun, police said.
Montellana and Batalla-Olmedo were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and booked at the Orange County Jail. Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Garden Grove Police detectives at (714) 731-5800.
