Police shoot out parolee’s tire in ‘hellacious pursuit’

SANTA ANA – A parolee-at-large was arrested Friday following a high-speed chase in which the driver rammed police cars, prompting an officer to shoot out a tire of the evading vehicle.

Two cars were stolen in a residential burglary in Garden Grove on Oct. 25. Police were able to locate one of the vehicles Friday and set up surveillance on it in the area of Euclid and First streets in Santa Ana, Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney said.

Police attempted to stop the red Jeep Liberty about 11:45 a.m. after someone got in it and started driving away, but the driver — later identified as 29-year-old Kenneth Durazo of Westminster — kept going, police said.

“It was a hellacious pursuit,” Whitney said.

At one point police cornered the suspect in a cul de sac, but he “rammed our police cars and one of our officers fired a single shot into the tire to disable it,” Whitney said.

The Jeep continued until it “crashed a few more times” and the driver “bailed” when the vehicle was too disabled to go further, Whitney said.

Police did a yard-to-yard search with police dogs until they finally found the suspect, who was bitten by a canine, at 12:52 p.m., Whitney said.
