The pursuit began when a Seal Beach Police Department officer stopped a couple near Fifth Street and Pacific Coast Highway. The male passenger switched sides with the female driver and drove away with police in pursuit, Seal Beach Police Department Lt. Julia Clasby told reporters.

During the pursuit the man drove on the wrong side of the street beginning in the area of North Studebaker Road, Clasby said.

The suspects crashed into at least six other vehicles just after 8 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Second Street, where the man fled from the vehicle but an officer used a Taser to subdue him. He was arrested at the scene.

The woman was injured in the crash and taken to a hospital.

The suspects had an infant in the vehicle, who was also taken to a hospital for observation. Police did not immediately name the suspects.

“In addition to the suspects, six other occupants were injured and taken to a hospital,” Clasby said.

The 60-70-year-old woman, a passenger in a vehicle uninvolved in the chase, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not immediately released.

Seal Beach police will conduct the chase investigation.
