Pedestrian killed in crash with Huntington Beach police vehicle

A pedestrian died after he was hit by a Huntington Beach police vehicle while an officer was responding to a call for service Saturday morning, Aug. 27, authorities said.

The crash involving a police SUV occurred about 5:30 a.m. in the area of North Pacific Avenue and Broadway in Sunset Beach, California Highway Patrol Officer C. Dishon said.

The pedestrian, a 45-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital, where he died, Dishon said. The 22-year-old officer was not injured.

The circumstances leading up to the crash were still under investigation by the CHP, Dishon said.

The CHP said authorities were sent to UCI Medical Center to conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The type of call the officer was responding to was not disclosed by officials. The man who died was not immediately publicly identified. Further information was not available.
