Events are scheduled in Orange County on Saturday, June 19, to mark the annual Juneteenth celebrations of the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with word that the Civil War had ended, setting free enslaved Black people.
Here are three places to observe what is also known as Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, Liberation Day and Emancipation Day:
Juneteenth Celebration: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Centennial Regional Park, 3000 W. Edinger Ave., Santa Ana. Speakers, vendors, music, food and games. Free. Presented by Orange County Heritage Council, the Santa Ana-based community group that organizes Orange County’s annual Black History Parade and Festival in February, along with food distributions and youth scholarships. Juneteenth Freedom Day: 2-6 p.m. at Anaheim Community Center Park, 250 E. Center St., Anaheim. Live entertainment, food truck, resource tables and COVID-19 vaccinations on site. Free. Deadline for $50 vendor slots is Wednesday, June 16; proceeds support the African American Alliance Fund. Freedom in Full Bloom – A Juneteenth Celebration: 3 p.m. at Julianne and George Argyros Plaza, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, 600 Town Center Dr., Costa Mesa. Outdoors interactive activities and performances to celebrate Black innovation and resilience in music, poetry, visual art and gardening. $10 per pod, up to six guests. Presented by Segerstrom Center for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Black Intellectual Innovation at Cal State Fullerton.
