Orange County reports more coronavirus deaths but fewer cases Sunday

The Orange County Health Care Agency’ reported 47 new coronavirus-related deaths on Sunday,  Jan. 17, up four from Saturday, for a total of 2,367 known COVID-related fatalities.

Daily death tolls do not depict an exact snapshot of exactly how many people died on any given date. Rather, the count includes deaths that occurred days before based on death certificates and completed case investigations.

Two days ago, on Friday, the county reported a one-day record of 82 fatalities.

Of the deaths counted Sunday, six were skilled nursing facility residents and eight were assisted living residents. None were Orange County jail inmates. Thirty-three people who died did not live in facilities.

On Sunday, 538 people with COVID-19 were under treatment in Orange County hospital intensive care units.

Southern California’s state-adjusted ICU bed availability for coronavirus patients remains at zero, in a formala that does not reflect beds still open for patients facing other life-threatening emergencies. The unadjusted figure shows 7.9%.of ICU beds available.

The county reported on Sunday 1,448 new cases of coroanvirus – less than half of Saturday’s sum of 3,454. In total, almost 211,000 Orange County residents have tested positive for coronavirus.

Orange County and all of California have experienced an explosion of cases since fall, before Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings and travel resulted in a nonstop surge. Two months ago, on Nov. 17, the county reported 352 new cases – a figure that soon would increase more than tenfold.

Hospitals have struggled to meet the drastically increased demand – adding temporary units in parking lots to house extra beds.

Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, the OC Health Care Agency will not release new numbers again until Tuesday, Jan. 19.
