NSSA West Coast Championships ride wave into Huntington Beach

The battle is back on at the beach.

The National Scholastic Surfing Association West Coast Championships kicked off on Wednesday, Aug. 25, an event that will draw an estimated 300 competitors to the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier through Sunday, Aug. 29.

The contest had been held at the same surf spot since 1997, but last year had to be moved to Oceanside because of permitting restrictions in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“But we are excited to be back presenting the competition on surfing’s greatest arena on southside,” said NSSA Executive Director Janice Aragon.

Waves are forecasted to be in the fun 2-to-4-foot range, which is “perfect size for competition,” she said.

The regional surf titles will determine who moves on to compete at the 2021 NSSA National Championships, expected to be held Oct. 19-26 at the same location.
