Newport Beach’s famed boat parade kicks off

The colorful lights glistened in the dark harbor water’s reflection as spectators marveled at the elaborately decorated boats that weaved through the waterways.

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade kicked off on Wednesday, Dec. 15, the first of five nights that typically draw thousands of people, some finding coveted spots at water-front restaurants, others scouring for a place to watch from the harbor’s edge.

The parade runs through Sunday, Dec. 19, launching at 6:30 p.m. each night from the tip of Lido Isle. The route is about 14 miles and takes about 2.5 hours.

About 110 boats, from mega yachts to small kayaks, entered this year. Most go all out with their decor.

Many people gathered at Marina Park, the largest public viewing area along the parade route. It offers front-row viewing as the boats pass and, on Wednesday, a prime spot to see the opening night fireworks from the Newport Pier. The first night’s grand marshals, several Orange County Olympians, walked a red carpet for the event kickoff.
