Newport Beach firefighters knock down blaze at mansion

A mansion in the Big Canyon area of Newport Beach was red-tagged Wednesday evening after a fire tore through it and burned for two hours.

Firefighters were called to 2 Rue Villars around 4 p.m. and began an offensive attack on the fire, said Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Natalie May. When the roof partially collapsed, firefighters evacuated the structure and went into a defensive position.

Video from the scene showed flames tearing through the large hilltop home.

Crews began putting water on the fire in the front of the house via an aerial ladder, and hand lines were secured on the other side of the home.
