Newport Beach crash shuts down Coast Highway, snarling Labor Day beach traffic

Coast Highway in Newport Beach was shut down in both directions shortly after 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 6, snarling Labor Day beach traffic, after a single-vehicle crash, Newport Beach police said.

The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was injured and taken by ambulance to the hospital, said police spokeswoman Heather Rangel. The car went “airborne,” CBS Los Angeles reported, leaving the road on the Back Bay bridge and landing on the embankment on the inland side of the bridge.

It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the crash, while police continued to investigate the scene into the night. The driver was a man, but Rangel said no other details about him were available. The driver’s condition was not known Monday evening.

Eastbound lanes were reopened shortly before 7 p.m. Westbound lanes were expected to remain closed until 10 or 11 p.m., Rangel said.
