A mountain lion was reported wandering into a residential neighborhood in unincorporated Santa Ana early Saturday morning, Dec. 26 and authorities were attempting to capture and tranquilize the animal.
The cat was in the backyard of a home on Calvo Drive just to the east of the 55 Freeway, said Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Pierce. Officers from the Sheriff’s Department, OC Animal Care and the state Department of Fish & Wildlife were on the scene with their guns drawn.
A helicopter circling overhead warned residents to stay in their homes because of a mountain lion being on the loose, according to reports.
Someone in Tustin posted a Ring doorbell video of what appears to be a mountain lion walking past some cars in a driveway and through a front yard early Saturday.
The person wrote: “Mountain lion in my front yard at 6:14a! We don’t live near a park or wilderness area.”
It’s unclear where the animal came from. Neighbors say they have seen mountain lions in the past. The Santiago Creek Wildlife & Watershed is a few miles to the west, and Santiago Canyon, where mountain lions have been seen, is a few miles to the east.
In Orange County, Mountain lions are also known to live in the Santa Ana Mountains, Limestone Canyon and Irvine and Santiago Oaks regional parks.
