A group of people from the Pacific Islander community gathered in Anaheim on Thursday morning to demonstrate against police brutality and the Memorial Day death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
It came on the heels of several days of protests in Orange County and nationwide. Thursday’s protest was near Anaheim City Hall, which was the site of peaceful demonstrations the day before.
It began at about 9:30 a.m. with people congregating at Carnegie Plaza in the Center Street Promenade area. City officials said on social media they expected the gathering to grow to about 150 people and remain peaceful.
Those gathered represented communities tied to Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga. Some wore traditional garb such as leaf headpieces and floral clothing.
The group was set to march on Anaheim Boulevard, Broadway, Harbor Boulevard and then Lincoln Avenue and culminate at City Hall, city officials said.
As they marched they chanted “Black Lives Matter!” while passing cars honked in support.
