More car windows shattered as rash of freeway BB shootings continues in Orange, Riverside counties

Eight more motorists had windows on their vehicles shot out or shattered while they traveled along the 91 Freeway in Orange and Riverside counties over the weekend, authorities said.

All appeared to be similar to several other BB or pellet gun shootings, most of which have occurred on the 91 Freeway over the past month.

The new string of shootings began Friday, May 14 and continued through Monday morning, California Highway Patrol Officer Dan Olivas said. Six of the eight occurred in Riverside County.

“We’re getting that similar type of report that people are driving, they are hearing something or seeing their various windows shattered and they are reporting it anywhere from immediately, to an hour-and-a-half later,” Olivas said.

He would not detail specifically when and where the shootings took place, but did say nearly all of them were in the Corona area.

In Orange County, a pair of motorists were shot at in Anaheim, CHP spokesman Officer Mitch Smith said.

The first occurred near Brookhurst Avenue about 8:50 p.m. Saturday, Smith said. The second occurred about 10 minutes later near State College Boulevard.

No injuries were reported in any of the most recent shootings, officers said.

Officers have been investigating since the first reports of BB gun shootings surfaced early in late April. The freeway shootings have also been reported in Los Angeles County.

“Each incident we come across is being investigated individually,” Olivas said. “However we are utilizing our resources and comparing notes to figure out what the similarities are here.”
