Map: 5.3 earthquake is largest of cluster in Imperial County

A magnitude 5.3 was the strongest of a cluster of earthquakes that struck near the Salton Sea on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The series of almost 60 quakes of 2.5 and greater began around 5 a.m. at the southern tip of the Salton Sea; the activity intensified around 10:30.

The 5.3 quake was at 10:55 a.m., and there were four other quakes of magnitude 4 or greater between 10:45 and 11:21.

The epicenters were within a 3-mile radius in a sparsely populated area of Imperial County.

The 5.3 quake was felt from the coast near San Diego to the Arizona line and from San Bernardino to the Mexican border, the USGS said.

It was the largest quake centered in California since a 5.8 last June near Lone Pine.
