Man waiting at Santa Ana bus stop killed in hit-and-run collision

A man waiting at a Santa Ana bus stop was killed in a hit-and-run collision just before 5 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

Several onlookers called 911 to report the collision in the area of 1500 South Fairview Street and remained on scene. When officers responded to the bus stop, the man was suffering from significant injuries and was taken to a local hospital where he was declared dead Monday morning, a news release from the Santa Ana Police Department said.

Investigators believe the suspect, identified as Juan Venicio Gallardo, 65, of Anaheim, was traveling north on Fairview Street when his car collided with the man and fled the scene. The collision remained under investigation.

The suspect vehicle, and the driver, were located shortly after in a nearby parking lot after eyewitnesses spoke with police, Santa Ana Police Department Sgt. Maria Lopez said.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and felony hit and run. His bail was set at $100,000.

The victim’s identification was not released, pending next of kin.
