Man, teenage girl arrested after woman, 75, found assaulted in Tustin

A 24-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl were arrested this weekend after a 75-year-old woman was found partially naked and critically injured in the bushes near a Tustin parking lot.

At about 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 1, Tustin police were called to the area of the 600 block of West 6th Street about a partially naked, unresponsive woman in the bushes, Tustin Lt. Andrew Birozy said.

Officers found her with serious face injuries. She was taken to a hospital, where she remained in critical condition on Monday, police said.

The woman lives nearby and was found close to where her car had been, Birozy said. Police determined she was assaulted at about 8 p.m. the night before.

On Saturday, May 2, at about 2:40 p.m. officers spotted the victim’s car traveling with three people inside. The officers took the occupants into custody, police said.

One of them was 24-year-old Fernando Valdovinos of Santa Ana. Police accuse him of hitting the woman in the face several times with his hands and then sexually assaulting her before taking off with her car, joined by his 16-year-old female acquaintance, who was also arrested.

The third person in the car, a man, was released when police determined he was not involved in the attack.

Valdovinos was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, attempted rape, carjacking, elder abuse and other sexual-related crimes. He had been on formal probation for auto theft, police said.

The teenage girl, who did not participate in the assault but police say was nearby at the time, was arrested on suspicion of carjacking and conspiracy. She had been on formal probation for robbery and was booked into Orange County Juvenile Hall, police said.

Police asked that anyone with information about the crime call Tustin police Detective Ryan Newton at 714-573-3249.
