Man pleads guilty to manslaughter in Coto de Caza crash

SANTA ANA — A 24-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday and was immediately sentenced to four years in prison for a collision that killed a 79-year-old man in Coto de Caza nearly four years ago.

Miller Reed Wilcox pleaded guilty to one felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter for the Dec. 18, 2017, collision that killed Melvyn Emery Gruben.

The crash occurred on Oso Parkway and Bridal Path.

Wilcox was driving westbound on Oso Parkway in a Ford Econoline van when he veered into the eastbound lanes and collided with a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck before slamming head-on into a Nissan sedan.

Wilcox has been in custody since May 18, according to jail records.

Wilcox also pleaded guilty to stealing a car while out on bail previously in the case, but that case was also resolved in Friday’s plea bargain, according to his attorney, Julie Swain.

“Considering all of the facts in the case it was a fair resolution and my client took responsibility today,” Swain said.
