Man killed trying to push disabled car to 405 Freeway shoulder in Irvine

A man was killed while trying to push his disabled vehicle to the shoulder of the northbound 405 Freeway in Irvine following a crash Saturday morning, Aug. 13, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol received reports of a crash involving three to four vehicles along the freeway near Jeffrey Road just past 5:30 a.m., spokesman Officer Anselmo Templado said.

Officers found the man lying in the roadway in the two middle northbound lanes, Templado said. He was identified only as a man in his 50s.

The chain reaction crash caused all but the carpool lane to shut down for nearly five hours, Templado said, adding all lanes were reopened just past 11 a.m.

Irvine police also shut down the on-ramp to the northbound freeway from Sand Canyon Avenue while CHP officers investigated.

Investigators said the man was driving a Toyota Corolla when he rear-ended a minivan, causing his car to become disabled between the two middle lanes of the freeway, Templado said.

The driver of the minivan pulled over to the shoulder, while the driver of the Corolla got out and attempted to push his car, which was perpendicular to the flow of traffic and facing northeast, from the driver’s side door, the spokesman said.

As he attempted to push the car, it was hit by a red Ford Mustang, whose driver may not have initially seen the disabled Corolla due to darkness, Templado said. The Mustang hit the passenger side of the Corolla, which launched the man several feet in the air.

He was hit by multiple other vehicles as he lie in the roadway, Templado said.

It wasn’t clear if the drivers of the minivan or the red Mustang were taken to a hospital with injuries.
