SANTA ANA — A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty Monday and was sentenced to six years in prison for a drunken driving crash that killed a man in Orange.
Manuel Antonio Sanchez Contreras pleaded guilty to a felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Contreras had a blood-alcohol level of .15, nearly twice the legal limit, at the time of the July 18 collision, according to court records.
Contreras was behind the wheel of a Honda Accord that rear-ended a Mazda Protege driven by 73-year-old Dean Lyles of Orange at West Sycamore Avenue and North Main Street, said Sgt. Phil McMullin of the Orange Police Department.
Contreras was driving northbound at a high rate of speed on Main Street about 4:20 p.m. when he crashed his vehicle into Lyles’ car, pushing it into El Camino Park, McMullin said.
Lyles, who was also traveling northbound, was attempting to turn left onto Sycamore Avenue when the crash occurred, McMullin said.
At the time he was arrested, police said Contreras was a Los Angeles resident.
