Man dies after jumping off Huntington Beach Pier into big surf

A man died following a jump off the Huntington Beach Pier on Sunday, Oct. 23. Surfers pulled the 43-year-old man to shore.

A woman, 36, who also jumped off the pier made it to shore and was uninjured, authorities said.

The Huntington Beach Police Department responded at about 6:30 p.m. to reports of two people who had jumped off the pier and into the ocean, according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Carey. Pier jumping is not allowed.

Upon arrival, police officers and firefighters discovered the man, who had been pulled ashore by surfers, was unresponsive. Huntington Beach Marine Safety and Fire personnel treated him and then transported him to Hoag Hospital, where he was declared dead.

No further information will be released at this time, including the names of those involved, Carey noted.

A big swell brought dangerous surf conditions to the region this weekend, with waves in the 6-foot to 8-foot range on Sunday with a strong rip current.
