Man arrested after deadly stabbing at Santa Ana skatepark

A 27-year-old Santa Ana man was arrested Friday, Jan. 7, on suspicion of stabbing two men at a Santa Ana skatepark this week, killing one of them, authorities said.

Through surveillance video and several witnesses, Santa Ana police identified Nicholas Nunez as the suspect and took him into custody just past 7:10 p.m., police said.

Nunez was involved in a fight with the two men at Centennial Skatepark, near Edinger Avenue and Fairview Street, and then is accused of stabbing them just after 8:20 p.m., Wednesday, police said.

Both victims were dropped off at a hospital with stab wounds to the chest, but one of them died. He was identified by the coroner as Jose Merlan, 27, of Santa Ana.

Information about the second victim was not immediately available.

What led up to the fight was not immediately known.

Nunez was booked into jail on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, police said. His bail amount was not immediately known.

The Career Criminal Unit, Gang Unit, VICE Unit and Major Enforcement Team helped with Nunez’ arrest, police said.
