A Palm Springs home situated below the mushroom-shaped masterpiece designed by architect John Lautner for comedian Bob Hope is on the market for just shy of $8.5 million.

Within its five-bedroom, nine-bathroom floorplan, the 7,827-square-foot contemporary dubbed Round House features automated glass panels.

Those curved floor-to-ceiling windows flood every room with natural light and open the interior of the home to desert and panoramic valley views from atop this perch on nearly 1.5 acres of guard-gated Southridge.

The property is one of only 24 estates in the exclusive enclave where neighbors include the domed Elrod House (featured in the 1971 James Bond film “Diamonds Are Forever”), the hull-shaped Boat House and Hope’s former residence, which sold in November 2016 for $13 million to billionaire investor Ron Burkle.

Through the decades, the neighborhood has also been home to the likes of Steve McQueen, Ali MacGraw, William Holden, Stefanie Powers, David Janssen and Suzanne Somers.

“The estate’s prestigious environment is a bonus to its one-of-a-kind design and view,” said Louise Hampton of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, the listing agent.

Records show the house sold last in November 2005 for $1.85 million. Owner Frank E. Dimick disassembled and then reimagined the structure from the ground up in 2012 to capture the views.

Dimick, who assumed the roles of designer and general contractor, installed steel support beams and expanded the ground-level living space after teams jackhammered the mountainside.

That also allowed him to expand the outdoor living area and relocate the pool, now an infinity edge.

“It became a different property, it became an ultimate view property and that’s what I was shooting for,” Dimick said. “The only house I know that has a better view is the one above, Bob Hope’s.”

The two-story house features an open-concept design. A sunken living room borders a gourmet kitchen with a hidden caterer’s kitchen, dining area, wet bar and billiard area. There’s a 10-person theater room, office and dedicated bathroom for the poolside.

Take the curved staircase or the indoor elevator to the oversized primary suite with a fireplace, two bathrooms with sunken tubs and one with a steam shower and a massage room, a walk-in closet and a private balcony.

Two outdoor kitchens, a waterfall stream that flows along the patio seating area near two fire pits and a four-car garage help round out the offering.

“No expense was spared in the redesign and build of this home,” Hampton said. “Its structural significance is even more unique in present day, as the building materials that were used at the time are now valued at three times higher than the amount they were valued at a decade ago.”

The property history shows Round House has been on and off the market since 2013, with an asking high of $10.555 million and a low of $7.9 million. It resurfaced in March at its current ask of $8.499 million.
