A Laguna Hills Spanish villa-style estate owned by late former Mayor Dore Gilbert and his wife, Gloria, has come on the market.

Located in Nellie Gail Ranch equestrian community, the asking price for the 6,742-square-foot, six-bedroom home built on a two-third-acre lot in 1988 is $3.995 million.

Inside, the home boasts a rustic aesthetic. There are open beam and cathedral ceilings, arched doorways, wrought ironwork, terracotta tiled floors and an earth-tone palette on the walls. Decorative tile graces backsplashes, fireplace surrounds and bathrooms.

“Every inch of this home combines the tranquility of natural materials with the luxury of custom craftsmanship and abundant space,” the listing reads.

The foyer branches off to a wood-paneled office with a domed brick ceiling in one direction and the living and rooms in the other. Straight ahead is the two-story family room with a tiled wet bar,

A serving hatch separates the gourmet kitchen from the breakfast room, connecting the sunroom with a fountain.

Upstairs, the primary suite combines a sitting area, bedroom and a bathroom with a fireplace-warmed sunken bathtub, a separate walk-in shower and a walk-in closet.

A gated motor court opens to a front fountain courtyard and manicured gardens cut by paths. There’s a built-in barbecue and dining area, outdoor fireplace, expansive back patio, swimming pool and poolside cabana in the resort-style backyard.

Brad Feldman and Jacci Pearce of Douglas Elliman of California hold the listing.

Gilbert, who died in July 2021 at 70, was a Newport Beach dermatologist affiliated with Hoag Hospital. The skin doctor served on the Laguna Hills City Council for eight years, from 2012 to 2020, as a two-term council member and a two-term mayor. He also served 29 years on the Saddleback Valley Unified School District Board.

A decade ago, Gilbert became one of the U.S. Army’s oldest recruits. He was deployed to Afghanistan as the chief medical officer of the 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade of the Massachusetts Army National Guard at age 61, as reported in 2011 by the Orange County Register.

The Register later reported on his safe return from Afghanistan and shared some of Lt. Col. Gilbert’s journal entries from the trenches.
