LA police, CHP pursue stolen vehicles including a city ambulance

LOS ANGELES — A stolen car suspect who allegedly tried to run down officers who were responding led police on a lengthy chase Monday night.
The pursuit began at 10:26 p.m. in the area of 67th Street and Victoria Avenue in South Los Angeles. Officers were observing the stolen car and saw the suspect get inside of it before the driver tried to run officers over and attempted to ram their vehicles, said Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Division.
No officers were injured, Im said.
The suspect led authorities to the San Diego (405) Freeway, traveling from West Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley, then on the southbound San Diego Freeway, the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway and westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway, then returning to the southbound San Diego Freeway.
The chase continued into Inglewood around 11:30 p.m. By midnight, the suspect was driving in neighborhoods around downtown Los Angeles, NBC Los Angeles reported.
The chase appeared to be winding down around 12:30 a.m. on Crenshaw Boulevard, north of Imperial Highway, in the Hawthorne/Inglewood area as the vehicle was moving slowly on flat tires after police deployed spike strips, broadcast reports said.
About that time, another pursuit was under way when someone stole a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance after a LAFD paramedic crew transferred a patient to staff at California Hospital Medical Center in downtown Los Angeles, the fire department said.
Whoever stole the unoccupied 2008 Ford E-Series ambulance did not activate its emergency lights and siren, the department said.
Los Angeles police and then the California Highway Patrol pursued the ambulance east on the 60 Freeway and then south on the 71 Freeway into the Chino Hills area of San Bernardino County.
By 1:20 a.m. the pursuit had ended with the suspect giving up and in custody on the 71 near Soquel Canyon Parkway, CBS Los Angeles reported.
