Killer of man at a taco truck in Santa Ana gets 31 years to life in prison

SANTA ANA — A 28-year-old serial robber who killed a man in front of a taco truck in Santa Ana was sentenced to 31 years to life in prison for his crimes, according to court records obtained Monday.

Junior Gil, who was sentenced Friday, was convicted Oct. 21 of first- degree murder for the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Jesse Ruben Gomez of Santa Ana, according to prosecutors in court papers.

Police were dispatched just before 5:20 p.m. Dec. 9, 2018, to South Kilson Drive and East St. Andrews Place. While officers were establishing a crime scene, a witness of a robbery told officers about a robbery that occurred nearby along a bike trail, prosecutors said.

Other witnesses and victims of robberies along the trail provided police with descriptions of the suspects.

Gomez’s uncle was attempting to revive his nephew at the scene as officers arrived. The uncle said he was outside his home when his nephew went to get tacos from a food truck and he heard gunshots ring out, so he drove over and found the victim, prosecutors said.

Gil was also convicted of a count of robbery and two counts of attempted robbery. Jurors also found true sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a firearm and gang activity.

The gang enhancements were dismissed Friday, according to court records.
