Investigators still piecing together Amazon collision in Irvine that killed child

Police continued working Wednesday, Aug. 17, to piece together exactly how a 23-month-old girl was fatally struck by an Amazon delivery van in an Irvine apartment complex, authorities said.

Investigators had no witness or surveillance video and were working solely with the physical evidence that was in front of a home in the 300 block of Estancia, Irvine police Sgt. Karie Davies said.

Police don’t believe at this point there was any negligence on the part of the driver, she said.

The crash occurred about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday as the driver was making a delivery at the complex, near lower Peters Canyon and the 261 toll road, police said.

Neighbors came out afterward to check on those involved, but no one saw the collision, Davies said.

“It was a totally sad and somber scene,” she said Wednesday morning.

Police planned to try to recreate the scene in order to get a better understanding of how the crash occurred, Davies said.

The girl was with her mother in the garage of their home before the crash occurred, Davies said, and police were working to determine exactly how the toddler wound up in the street.

Davies described the driver as devastated.

“He’s just a young man trying to make a living and get himself through school,” she said.
