Huntington Beach Civic Center on lockdown as police surround man claiming he is armed

Parts of the Huntington Beach Civic Center were placed on lockdown Monday morning, April 25, after police said they were negotiating with a man who told them he was armed.

Huntington Beach police said on Twitter at around 10 a.m. that their officers were responding to the man at the Civic Center plaza.

The man told officers he had a weapon and was suicidal, said Jennifer Carey, a city spokeswoman.

By 10:30 a.m., City Hall and the Police Department were still on lockdown as officers surrounded the man, who had retreated to one corner of the plaza, Carey said.

“We’re all just kind of staying in place,” Carey said. “We’re all inside City Hall staying put.”

Because of the incident, front desk services at the Police Department, such as permit applications, were not open to the public.

It wasn’t clear if the man actually had a weapon. Police haven’t said yet exactly when or how the incident began.

The plaza connects several Huntington Beach government buildings, including the Police Department. Huntington Beach High School, which is across the street from the Civic Center, was also placed on lockdown but lifted at around 10 a.m.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
