HERO program’s green-energy loans leave Southern California homeowners in red, critics say-media-1

“This home is every breath I take. It is my life,” Amalitsa Anastasiou says of her Menifee home on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020. The loan program, run by the Western Riverside Council of Governments in conjunction with a private company called Renovate America, finances energy-efficiency. She says her property tax bill went up by nearly $5,000 after taking out a $40,000 loan. She’s working with her bank to avoid foreclosure. (Photo by Cindy Yamanaka, The Press-Enterprise/SCNG)
