Girl Scouts partner with Grubhub to deliver cookies to your doorstep

Craving those tangy, tasty Lemonades or the chewy, gooey, coconut and chocolate Caramel deLites?

Girl Scout cookie sales have launched in Orange County and soon you won’t even have to leave your house or get out of your pajamas to get the tasty treats delivered.

The organization announced Monday, Jan. 11,  it is partnering with Grubhub to get cookies delivered to customers – one way troops are adapting to the ongoing pandemic.

The Girl Scouts’ collaboration with Grubhub starts Jan. 28 in Orange County at grubhub.com/food/girl_scouts. But sales of cookies by troops have already begun if you know a scout to order from.

“OC Girl Scouts will get hands-on experience managing e-commerce by tracking and fulfilling orders, managing inventory, and more, using Grubhub’s back-end technology,” the organization’s announcement said. “As always, proceeds benefit the local troop and council.”

Grubhub is waiving its fees “to make this new delivery option feasible for Girl Scouts without reducing troops’ and councils’ proceeds,” the announcement said.

The Girl Scouts also announced the launch of a new cookie that will available through Orange County troops, a French toast-inspired flavor called “Toast-Yay!”

The Girl Scout Cookie program  runs through March 7 in Orange County.

This year, with the coronavirus pandemic ongoing, sales will be different. Girl Scouts posting up in front of stores or going door-to-door to sell cookies won’t happen during current stay-at-home orders.

“With the COVID-19 pandemic, Girl Scouts are faced with the same challenges as other businesses and are creatively pivoting to safely bring America’s favorite cookies to residents across Orange County,”  the organization said in its announcement. “Girls are continuing to embrace their entrepreneurial spirit, stay connected to their communities, and have fun by participating in the cookie program. Proceeds from each and every purchase stay local with the troop and council to power amazing experiences for Orange County Girl Scouts.”

This year, the Girl Scouts of Orange County is also launching a new initiative for local businesses to participate in “The Great Girl Scout Cookie Buy Out” to support local troops.

“While this year’s cookie season may look different, if there’s one thing we know that Girl Scouts never run out of – it’s innovation and creativity,” Girl Scouts of Orange County CEO Vikki Shepp said.

Through the buyout program, businesses and individuals can help girls achieve their cookie-selling goals with bulk purchases of 50, 100 or 200 – maybe for their employees or business partners, or the Girl Scouts can arrange to donate the boxes to the military and food banks, which provides businesses with a tax deductible donation, Julie Weeks, chief marketing officer for Girl Scouts of Orange County, said in an e-mail.

“It’s a win for OC Girl Scouts, local businesses, and a new way to spread the joy of Girl Scout cookies during these challenging times,” Weeks said.

There are an estimated 18,000 girls in the Girl Scouts of Orange County, as well as 12,000 adults. Find out more about the cookie sales at girlscoutcookies.org or there is a Scout Cookie Finder app for smart devices.
