Slowly and steadily, firefighters battling the Bond fire were nearing full containment of the blaze – securing another portion of the fire’s perimeter overnight, officials said Wednesday morning, Dec. 9.
After downsizing the fire’s path to 6,686 acres on Tuesday, fire crews continued to keep the fire from spreading while bumping up its containment to 90% as of 7 a.m. Containment is the percentage of the fire’s border that the fire won’t expand beyond.
The Bond, which erupted Dec. 2, and spread rapidly because of powerful Santa Ana winds, slowed over the weekend after those winds died down, allowing firefighters to gain the upper hand.

But the fire did wreaked havoc in its first two days, destroying 31 buildings and damaging another 21. The last of the evacuation warnings were lifted Tuesday.
It is unclear what caused the fire. Last week, investigators were looking at a house on Bond Way in Silverado Canyon, where the fire originated before spreading to nearby wildland.
