Fentanyl suspected after 5 found unconscious in Westminster park

Investigators suspect that five people who were found unconscious at a park in Westminster and rushed to hospitals Saturday, Nov. 13, may have overdosed on fentanyl, police said Sunday.

Paramedics were initially summoned to Sigler Park, 7200 Plaza St., following reports of one person unconscious near a restroom at about 6 p.m. Saturday, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Greg Barta said. When first-responders arrived, they found four more people nearby who were also unresponsive.

“Officers deployed Narcan, as all subjects exhibited signs of opioid or possible fentanyl overdose,” Westminster police said in a news release Sunday.

Paramedics rushed the five people to hospitals, where they remained on Sunday, police said.

“The circumstances of the possible fentanyl exposure are under investigation,” the release stated.

Police did not specify whether any drugs were found at the scene. The ages and genders of the people hospitalized were not provided.

Meanwhile, Sigler park was temporarily closed Saturday as a hazardous materials team and the staff from the Orange County Health Care Agency inspected the area. No other members of the public were harmed, and police described the matter as “an isolated incident.”
