Female surfer, 24, needed CPR and taken to hospital from Doheny State Beach

A 24-year-old surfer was taken to Mission Hospital Tuesday, Dec. 1, after being pulled in from the ocean by other surfers at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point and needing CPR on the sand, authorities said.

The incident happened at 3:18 p.m. on Tuesday near “Second Spot,” a surf break in the middle area of the beach, said Kevin Pearsall, State Parks Orange Coast District superintendent.

“It was not a guarded beach at the time due to the time of year. The permanent lifeguards are on patrol. Surfers in the water were the first to grab her,” he said. “Once she was on the sand, our lifeguards took over and administered additional CPR.”

The woman was taken to Mission Hospital by the Orange County Fire Authority.

Surfer Tom Cozad was among the pack of surfers out in the water when he said he saw the first responders performing CPR on the woman.  He said the waves were small and soft during the afternoon.

“The whole line up went somber,” he said.
