Fatal stabbing at Centennial Skate Park in Santa Ana, suspect in custody

A man has been arrested after a stabbing at Centennial Skate Park left one man dead and another injured, said Santa Ana Police Department officials.

Officers responded to South Coast Global Medical Center Thursday evening, Jan. 6, where two men had been dropped off with several stab wounds.

An initial investigation and surveillance footage showed the men were in a physical altercation with the suspect at the skate park when they were stabbed, according to a news release.

Jose Merlan, 27 of Santa Ana, was pronounced dead and the second victim was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

After interviews with several witnesses, Nicholas Nunez, 27 of Santa Ana, was taken into custody Friday evening and booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Detectives believe the altercation was the result of an ongoing dispute.

The investigation was ongoing.
