Camp Pendleton has called for mandatory evacuations in several areas of the base, including the Lake O’Neill Campground and near the Wounded Warrior Battalion.
Wednesday afternoon a fire had spread to about 1,000 acres in the base’ northeastern Area 33, prompting the evacuations. Camp Pendleton fire crews are battling the blaze, base officials said.
Military personnel and their families are being asked to seek shelter at the Paige Field House.
