Don’t let inflatable Santas scare off holiday home shoppers

Whether you find the perfect holiday decor at your favorite brick and mortar store, your favorite internet shop or up in your attic, take some extra precautions this season if you’re planning to sell your house before the end of the year.

Pay close attention when stringing lights both outside and inside your house. Watch for tripping hazards, and liberally use duct tape and floor mats to cover electrical cords you run down the sidewalk and across floors. Buyers and their agent are going to be so focused on the features of your house, they might not notice tripping hazards holiday decorations might pose.

Also pay attention to the placement of any draping cords, sticky spiderwebs, garland and tensile draped around doorways and hanging from ceilings. Leave enough clearance for tall buyers, lest they get choked or strangled.

Consider alerting your agent to the timing of your large blowup decorations in your yard. A note in the listing details (in the appropriate field) or a detailed text to the buyers’ agent might ward off fear or panic when the generator automatically starts pumping air into the life-sized sleigh as the prospects are exiting your house.

And if you had to stuff your closets with the “normal” pillows and throws to make room for the festive holiday ones, make sure they are not posed to tumble off the shelf or out of the closet when a curious visitor opens the door.
