Coronavirus: Unvaccinated residents five times more likely to catch coronavirus

The OC Health Care Agency reported 295 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, Dec. 9, increasing the cumulative total since tracking began to 316,070.

About 67% of Orange County residents (2.27 million people) have received two vaccine shots, and 595,803 of those also have received a booster. Still, coronavirus is rising again in the county, particularly among people who aren’t fully vaccinated. The seven-day case rate for unvaccinated residents is 24.2 per 100,000, while the case rate for vaccinated residents is 4.5 per 100,000. The average daily number of new cases (7-day average with 7-day lag) in Orange County was 255 per day as of Nov. 30, up from 204 cases per day the prior week. Last year, on Nov. 20, it was 1,247. The peak for the daily rate was 3,497 on Jan. 8.

There were 13 more people with confirmed cases of coronavirus reported in Orange County hospitals on Thursday, bringing the total number of hospitalizations to 196, including 59 patients in intensive care units, two more than the previous report.

The county reported 10 more virus-related deaths as of Thursday, (35 in the last three days) increasing the count in Orange County to 5,806 since the start of the pandemic.

Data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death was recorded on Nov. 27.

Of the total deaths reported from the virus, 1,206 were residents of skilled nursing facilities, 645 lived in assisted living facilities, two were O.C. jail inmates and 18 were listed as homeless.

It is estimated 303,753 county residents have recovered from the virus. The number of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.

There have been 5,913,405 cumulative tests to date with 97,989 taken since last Thursday’s count.
