Coronavirus: Orange County surpasses 100,000 cases, with 3,121 new ones, 14 new deaths on Dec. 13

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 3,121 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, Dec. 13., increasing the cumulative total in the county to 102,513 cases.

In the past two days, as an outbreak in the Orange County jail system continues, 216 inmates have tested positive.

The county also reported 1,236 patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus on Sunday – up by 86 from Saturday’s report. That surpasses the height of hospitalizations during the first surge of the virus in July when there were 722 people in Orange County hospitals on July 14.

There were 284 patients listed in ICUs on Sunday. The adjusted percentage of beds available in ICUs in the county was 1.6%.

An estimated 23,700 cases have been recorded in the last 14 days.

The county update reported 1,694,359 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 21,438 tests reported in the last 24 hours.

Fourteen new deaths were reported by the county on Sunday, bringing the total number of reported deaths to 1,694. The most recent death recorded was on Dec. 7.

Of the cumulative 1,694 deaths reported from the virus, 615 were skilled nursing facility residents, 147 were in assisted living facilities and four were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 32.8% (561, up 10)
  • 75-84: 22.02% (372. up 2)
  • 65-74: 19.52% (330, up 2)
  • 55-64: 13.87% (233)
  • 45-54: 7.56% (127)
  • 35-44: 2.5% (42)
  • 25-34: 1.43% (24)
  • 18-24: 0.25% (4)
  • 17 and younger: 0.06% (1)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say.

It is estimated about 67% of the cumulative reported cases, or 65,621 people as of Sunday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
