The map below is from the OC Health Care Agency’s dashboard update on Thursday, Nov. 4, and shows coronavirus test positivity rates – the rate at which tests taken are coming back positive for the virus – by ZIP code.

Case rates and testing positivity (which are both provided as the average over seven days, lagging for a week to give time for more complete data to be factored in) are updated each week, reflecting information up to the prior day for testing data, and same day for case data. Calculations are based on guidelines from the California Department of Public Health.

The map from Nov. 10 (Click on the image to go to the site. It may take a few minutes to load):

Last week five Orange County ZIP codes had a test positivity rate greater than 4%. This week, three Orange County ZIP code has a test positivity rate as of Nov. 10 greater than 4%.

**Note: ZIP codes with less than 20 cases can result in unstable rate estimates and should be interpreted with caution.

Orange County’s daily case rate increased from 7.2 cases per 100,000 people last week to 7.3 per 100,000 this week, which would have still been in the red tier (substantial tier) of the California Department of Public Health’s four-tier color system, if it was still in place.

The test positivity rate in the county is 2.8% (7-day average with 7-day lag), an increase from 2.5% last week, which would be in the orange tier (Moderate tier). Both metrics have improved in the last few weeks. A month ago, both metrics were in what would have been the purple (most restrictive) tier for several months.

The average daily number of new cases (7-day average with 7-day lag) in Orange County was 255 cases per day as of Nov. 1, up from 258 cases per day the prior week. Last year, on Nov. 1, it was 409. The peak for the daily rate was 3,497 on Jan. 8.

Booster shots and vaccines for kids 5-11:

The CDC recommended expanded eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots on Oct. 21. The eligibility is as follows:

For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the following groups are eligible for a booster shot at 6 months or more after their initial series:

      • 65 years and older
      • Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings
      • Age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions
      • Age 18+ who work or live in high-risk settings

For the nearly 15 million people who got the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, booster shots are also recommended for those who are 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months ago.

The COVID-19 Vaccine (Pfizer) for Kids Ages 5-11:

      • Is a different dose size than those age 12+
      • Is safe and effective with minimum side effects
      • Significantly reduces your child’s risk of getting COVID-19, or suffering from severe COVID-19 (hospitalization/ICU/Death)
      • Generates a robust immune response offering protection when going to school and other indoor social gatherings
      • Can reduce missed school days
