Coronavirus: 8 new deaths, 287 new cases reported in Orange County on Sept. 1

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 287 new cases of the coronavirus as of Tuesday, Sept. 1, bringing the cumulative total of positive tests to 48,825 cases.

An estimated 11,434 new cases have been reported in the last 30 days.

There were eight new deaths reported in Orange County on Tuesday, raising the death toll to 988 people. The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say. The most recent death was on Aug. 27.

Of the 988 deaths countywide, 372 were skilled nursing facility residents, 67 were in assisted living facilities and one was listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85+: 31% (306)
  • 75-84: 22% (214)
  • 65-74: 20% (196)
  • 55-64: 13% (139)
  • 45-54: 9% (86)
  • 35-44: 3% (29)
  • 25-34: 1.3% (14)
  • 18-24: <1% (3)
  • 0-17: 0% (1)

It is estimated that about 85 percent of the cumulative reported cases, or 41,860 people as of Tuesday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

The county reports a total of 657,140 tests have been given since testing began, and at least 6,339 tests were reported in the last 24 hours. Orange County’s test positivity rate – the share of tests that come back positive – is about 5%.

The county reported 307 patients in hospitals with the coronavirus on Tuesday. The peak in the county was 722 confirmed hospitalizations on July 14. The county report showed there are 93 patients in ICUs as of Tuesday, four fewer than the previous day and the lowest level since May 12.

On Friday, Aug. 28, the state of California moved away from its watch list system to a four-colored risk level assessment, placing Orange County in the most-restrictive tier, the purple tier. According to the California Department of Public Health, Orange County’s lower case rate per 100,000 people and lower test positivity rate could move it from the purple “widespread risk” category to the red “substantial risk” category. Once categorized on the red tier, some indoor, non-essential businesses may reopen.
