Coronavirus: 5,953 new cases, 63 new deaths in Orange County over Dec. 25 and 26

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 5,953 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, Dec. 26, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 144,263 cases since tracking began. The county did not post an update on Friday, Dec. 25.

The report showed 1,858 total cases among inmates, as an outbreak in the Orange County jail system continues.

The county also reported 1,957 patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus on Saturday.

There were 432 patients listed in intensive care units on Saturday. ICU capacity is dwindling in Southern California. The percentages shown here have been adjusted by state public health officials to represent the high levels of COVID-19 patients among all ICU patients. More actual beds may be available.

An estimated 41,087 cases of the virus have been recorded in the last 14 day in Orange County.

The county update reported 1,964,297 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 37,585 tests reported in the last 24 hours.

There were 63 new deaths reported by the county on Saturday, increasing the total number of reported deaths to 1,845. The most recent death recorded was on Dec. 19.

Of the cumulative 1,845 deaths reported from the virus, 638 were skilled nursing facility residents, 180 were in assisted living facilities and four were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 33.12% (611, up 20)
  • 75-84: 22.11% (408, up 15)
  • 65-74: 19.62% (362, up 11)
  • 55-64: 13.55% (250, up 8)
  • 45-54: 7.53% (139, up 8)
  • 35-44: 2.33% (43, up 1)
  • 25-34: 1.41% (26)
  • 18-24: 0.27% (5)
  • 17 and younger: 0.05% (1)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say.

It is estimated about 79,794 people have recovered as of Saturday. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
