Coronavirus: 4,406 new cases, 26 new deaths reported in Orange County on Jan. 2

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 4,406 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, Jan. 2, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 161,589 cases since tracking began.

There were 26 deaths reported by the county on Saturday, raising the total number of reported deaths to 1,901. The most recent death recorded was on Dec. 26.

The county also reported 2,097 patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus on Saturday.  That is a decrease of 31 patients from Thursday’s report.

The county did not update the figures on Friday, Jan.1, those figures are reflected here, and will not update on Sunday, Jan. 3, due to scheduled maintenance with the California Department of Public Health.

There were 501 patients listed in intensive care units on Saturday, as ICU capacity dwindles in Southern California. The percentages here have been adjusted by state public health officials to represent the high levels of COVID-19 patients among all ICU patients. More actual beds may be available.

An estimated 38,161 cases of the virus have been recorded in Orange County in the last 14 days.

The county update said 2,076,496 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 23,385 new tests since the previous report.

Of the cumulative 1,901 deaths reported from the virus, 640 were skilled nursing facility residents, 183 were in assisted living facilities and four were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 33.77% (623)
  • 75-84: 22.3% (424)
  • 65-74: 19.46% (370)
  • 55-64: 13.83% (263)
  • 45-54: 7.52% (143)
  • 35-44: 2.37% (45)
  • 25-34: 1.42% (27)
  • 18-24: 0.26% (5)
  • 17 and younger: 0.05% (1)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say.

It is estimated about 91,69 people have recovered as of Saturday. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
