Coronavirus: 43 new deaths pushes Orange County over 2,000 mark

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 4,204 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, Jan. 9, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 185,481 cases since tracking began.

There were 43 deaths reported by the county on Saturday, raising the total number of reported deaths to 2,041. The most recent death recorded was on Dec. 31.

The county also reported 2,221 patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus on Saturday.  That is a decrease of 38 patients since the last report on Jan. 8.

There were 528 patients listed in intensive care units on Saturday, as ICU capacity dwindles in Southern California. The percentages here have been adjusted by state public health officials to represent the high levels of COVID-19 patients among all ICU patients. More actual beds may be available.

An estimated 38,018 cases of the virus have been recorded in Orange County in the last 14 days.

The county update said 2,223,962 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 17,080 new tests since the previous report.

Of the cumulative 2,041 deaths reported from the virus, 683 were skilled nursing facility residents, 221 were in assisted living facilities and four were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 33.32% (680, up 16)
  • 75-84: 22.98% (469, up 17)
  • 65-74: 19.11% (390, up 8)
  • 55-64: 13.57% (277, up 2)
  • 45-54: 7.15% (146)
  • 35-44: 2.25% (46)
  • 25-34: 1.32% (27)
  • 18-24: 0.24% (5)
  • 17 and younger: 0.05% (1)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say.

It is estimated about 111,854 people have recovered from the virus as of Saturday. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
