Coronavirus: 40 new deaths, 252 new cases reported in Orange County on Feb. 21

Forty new deaths were reported by Orange County public health officials on Sunday, Feb. 21, raising the total number of COVID-19 fatalities to 3,810.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on Feb. 13.

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 252 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 244,632  cases since tracking began.

The county also reported 577 patients in local hospitals. There were 190 patients listed in intensive care units on Sunday, down nine since the previous report. The hospital patient totals are about the same level as where they were at the end of November.

The California Department of Public Health vaccines dashboard shows that 620,629 vaccines doses have been distributed in Orange County as of Feb. 20.

An estimated 5,426 cases of the virus have been recorded in Orange County in the last 14 days. The 14-day average of cases was 9,111 a week ago.

The county update said 2,962,759 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 12,110 new tests since the previous report.

Of the cumulative 3,810 deaths reported from the virus, 940 were skilled nursing facility residents, 428 were in assisted living facilities, one was an O.C. jail inmate and eight were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 32.89% (1,253, up 10)
  • 75-84: 23.96% (913, up 5)
  • 65-74: 19.27% (734, up 6)
  • 55-64: 13.81% (526, up 18)
  • 45-54: 6.56% (250)
  • 35-44: 2.2% (84)
  • 25-34: 1.05% (40)
  • 18-24: 0.24% (9, up 1)
  • 17 and younger: 0.03% (1)

It is estimated 223,522 people have recovered from the virus as of Sunday. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
