The report showed 1,872 total cases among inmates, as an outbreak in the Orange County jail system continues. That was up by 14 cases from Saturday’s report.

The county also reported 1,990 patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus on Sunday.

There were 443 patients listed in intensive care units on Sunday, as ICU capacity dwindles in Southern California.

An estimated 41,028 cases of the virus have been recorded in Orange County in the last 14 days.

The county update said 1,975,944 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 11,647 tests in the last 24 hours.

There was one new death reported by the county on Sunday, increasing the total number of reported deaths to 1,846. The most recent death recorded was on Dec. 19.

Of the cumulative 1,846 deaths reported from the virus, 638 were skilled nursing facility residents, 181 were in assisted living facilities and four were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 33.12% (611)
  • 75-84: 22.11% (409, up 1)
  • 65-74: 19.62% (362)

  • 25-34: 1.41% (26)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say.

It is estimated about 80,615 people have recovered as of Sunday. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
