The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 2,091 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, Dec. 12., increasing the cumulative total in the county to 99,393 cases.

An estimated 21,381 cases have been recorded in the last 14 days.

The county update reported 1,672,921 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 31,605 tests reported in the last 24 hours.

Eighteen new deaths were reported by the county on Saturday, bringing the total number of reported deaths to 1,680. The most recent death recorded was on Dec. 7.

Of the cumulative 1,680 deaths reported from the virus, 607 were skilled nursing facility residents, 142 were in assisted living facilities and four were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 32.8% (551)
  • 75-84: 22.02% (370)
  • 65-74: 19.52% (328)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say.

It is estimated about 67% of the cumulative reported cases, or 65,217 people as of Sunday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

The county also reported 1,150 patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus on Saturday – up 28 from Friday. That surpasses the height of hospitalizations during the first surge of the virus in July when there were 722 people in Orange County hospitals on July 14.

There were 273 patients listed in ICUs on Saturday. The adjusted percentage of beds available in ICUs in the county was 1.7%.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
