Coronavirus: 177 new cases, no new deaths in reported Orange County on Oct. 12

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 117 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, Oct. 12, increasing the cumulative total to 55,892 cases.

The county’s seven-day average for cases, with a seven-day lag time, is 197 new cases per day as of Sept. 28, about what it was this time in August.

The county has had an estimated 4,962 cases in the last 30 days.

There were no news deaths reported from the coronavirus as of Monday, The county has had 1,341 deaths related to the virus reported to date.

Of the deaths in Orange County, 480 were skilled nursing facility residents, 90 were in assisted living facilities and four was listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 31% (424)
  • 75-84: 22% (286)
  • 65-74: 20% (267)
  • 55-64: 13% (192)
  • 45-54: 9% (111)
  • 35-44: 3% (37)
  • 25-34: 1.3% (19)
  • 18-24: <1% (4)
  • 17 and younger: 0% (1)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say. The most recent deaths were on Oct. 4.

It is estimated about 90% of the cumulative reported cases, or 49,947 people as of Monday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

The county also reported 167 patients in hospitals with the coronavirus on Monday. The peak for hospitalizations in Orange County was 722 on July 14. There were 56 patients listed in ICUs in Monday’s report.

The county update also reported 948,671 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, and at least 4,504 tests were reported in the last 24 hours.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
