Coronavirus: 13 new deaths, 1,795 new cases reported in Orange County on Jan. 24

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 1,795 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, Jan. 24, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 223,288 cases since tracking began.

There were 13 new deaths reported by the county on Sunday, raising the total number of reported deaths to 2,638.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on Jan. 13.

The county also reported 1,732 patients in local hospitals, which is 86 fewer than the previous report. There are 467 patients listed in intensive care units on Sunday.

An estimated 31,427 cases of the virus have been recorded in Orange County in the last 14 days.

The county update said 2,560,248 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 15,466 new tests since the previous report.

Of the cumulative 2,638 deaths reported from the virus, 787 were skilled nursing facility residents, 285 were in assisted living facilities, one was an O.C. jail inmate and four were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 34.46% (909, up 6)
  • 75-84: 22.67% (598, up 1)
  • 65-74: 19.18% (506, up 2)
  • 55-64: 13.27% (350, up 4)
  • 45-54: 6.86% (181)
  • 35-44: 2.12% (56)
  • 25-34: 1.21% (32, up 1)
  • 18-24: 0.19% (5)
  • 17 and younger: 0.04% (1)

It is estimated about 153,862 people have recovered from the virus as of Sunday. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.

Vaccines administered as of Jan. 17

The California Department of Public Health site shows a total of 3,226,775 vaccine doses, which includes the first and second dose, have been shipped to local health departments and health care systems as of Jan. 17.

The totals of vaccines administered across six different regions are in the maps below. As of Jan. 17, a total of 1,393,224 vaccine doses have been administered statewide.That’s up 609,748 from the Jan. 11 report. The state cautions that the numbers do not represent true day-to-day change as reporting may be delayed.
