Chase of LA drive-by shooting suspect leads to standoff, gunfire on 91 in Fullerton

FULLERTON — A suspect wanted in three drive-by shootings, two deadly, between USC and downtown Los Angeles led police on a pursuit Tuesday morning and reportedly opened fire on authorities as they inserted tear gas into the vehicle, which was boxed in on the westbound 91 Freeway in Fullerton, and sustained a gunshot wound.

It was not immediately clear if officers returned fire or the suspect shot himself.

Officers in two armored vehicles blocked the light-colored SUV from moving around 4 a.m. near the Harbor Boulevard exit and began inserting tear gas about 4:50 a.m. and the suspect opened fire, Fox11 reported.

The shootings were reported around 1 a.m. A man was killed while sitting in his vehicle in a Starbucks drive-thru near Figueroa and 28th streets, and the driver of an Escalade was killed later at Figueroa and Seventh streets, Fox11 said.

A third shooting was reported, but the driver was not hit, the station said.

The shootings were connected, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

A pursuit that lasted nearly three hours, often at slow speeds, traveled along the 60 and 57 freeways before coming to a standstill on the westbound 91 Freeway near Harbor Boulevard about 3:25 a.m.

Officers used a loudspeaker to order the suspect to surrender, but he refused to comply.

Both directions of the 91 Freeway through Fullerton between Raymond Avenue and East Street are closed to traffic until further notice.
